Grows as small to large, often almost pure patches.
Occurs locally on unshaded damp ground close to edges of mires
and on wet heathland, especially where vegetation is very
closely grazed. Locally abundant in this habitat on heavily
grazed parts of Crowdy Marsh, often close to Racomitrium
lanuginosum.
