Majority of records of the species refer to this
var., especially from open soil substrates. Grows in soil
heaps, gardens, arable fields and their edges (cereal
stubbles, maize stubble, brassicas) and disturbed sandy soil
at road edge. Associates recorded: Barbula unguiculata,
Bryum violaceum, Dicranella staphylina,
Pohlia melanodon,
Tortula truncata,
rarely Didymodon
tomaculosus.
Frequently c.fr. Capsules immature: 2-4, 10-12,
dehisced 10.
