Grows on unshaded, sloping surfaces of granitic
rocks on hillsides, in heaths, about tors or in pastures, and
on a heathy slope in area of old mine-spoil. Closer associates
include Grimmia
trichophylla, Hedwigia stellata, Racomitrium
heterostichum.
