Frequently forms extensive low patches which are
mainly red-brown, but green where most heavily shaded. On
rotting, decorticated trunks (including Beech, oak) lying on
or just above floors of deciduous woodland and in wood edges,
in sheltered and often damp places such as near streams. Often
alone, but associates include Lophocolea
bidentata,
Lophocolea heterophylla and Pseudotaxiphyllum
elegans.
