Habitat & Distribution

One of the most distinctive European rays, this species is an offshore, demersal, fish most often found on sandy bottoms in deeper water with a depth range of 50-200m. A more southerly species it is recorded from the south coast of England from Cornwall (rare) to Kent, north-west Wales, south-west Scotland and the south and west coasts of Ireland. It is perhaps, most common in the mid and eastern end of the English Channel and the Channel Islands. This species has recently been placed on the UK List of Priority Species.
