Poecilus kugelanni

Range & Status

Formerly widespread across southern Britain but has become increasingly scarce in recent years.

Regional Distribution

Found at the cliff bottom at St. Loy, West Penwith, in 1936 by R.T. Bannister, and also an older record from Cubert in 1911 by A.J. Allen. Discovered at Dannonchapel in 2005.

Habitat & Ecology

Sandy or gravelly soils, usually on heathland.

Threats

Agricultural intensification along the cliff tops and inland heaths; abandonment of rough grazings, leading to coarsening of the vegetation; development pressure on ' waste' land.

Conservation

Maintain rough grazings on unimproved land and protect from commercial pressures. A Priority Species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
