Megatrema anglicum

Range & Status

This warm-water species of barnacle is found growing around the ' calyx' of the solitary Devonshire Cup-coral Caryophyllia smithii , from low water to about 80m depth. Its geographical distribution is much more restricted than that of its host which ranges from southern England to Shetland. The barnacle and coral combination is only found on the southern coasts of England and south Wales from Sidmouth, Devon, to Pembrokeshire, and in the extreme south-west of Ireland. Elsewhere it is found from Roscoff in Brittany south to the Mediterranean, Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands.
