A rare fish which is found in rock crevices, pier pilings and other biotopes with reduced light, in shallow coastal waters between 0-40m depth, but preferring 6-12m. First recorded in Britain from the Portland Harbour area (Dorset) in 1972 and it has since been found on the south Devon coast. More recently is has been recorded in Cornish waters with three or more sites in the Rame Head area, Talland Bay, on the ' Volnay' wreck off Porthallow on the Lizard Peninsula and off Durgan in the Helford Estuary. Elsewhere it occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and from Senegal, Madeira and the Canary Islands north along the Atlantic coast to southern England.
