Pelagia noctiluca

Range & Status

A pelagic species which is rarely blown into Cornish waters and stranded upon its beaches. Sustained periods of westerly or south-westerly winds favour its occurrence and stranding, especially on the northern coastline of Cornwall. This jellyfish is a luminous species which can inflict a severe and painful sting. Most strandings have occurred in the winter months. Some strandings have involved tens of thousands of individuals.
