Range & Status
A rare species found on old trees, especially Beech Fagus sylvatica and Oak Quercus spp. especially in ancient woodland. It has also been recorded growing on shaded vertical granite rock faces in west Cornwall. Also in west Cornwall it has been found with apothecia growing on Willow Salix spp. More recently Giavarini (2002) has found flourishing populations on Gorse Ulex spp. scrub during survey work at several metalliferous mining sites. Elsewhere it is known from western Europe and Macronesia. Whereas this species does not appear to have any immediate threats at its old woodland sites, those populations on Gorse on metalliferous mine sites may be at threat from fire and landscaping activity.
