Heterodermia speciosa

Range & Status

Previously named H. isidophora this species is found on, and between, various moss species growing between serpentine rocks on south-facing slopes. A very rare species recorded only from the Lizard Peninsula, and possibly a few 19th Century records from S.W. Ireland, but nowhere else in Europe. Otherwise recorded from Central and South America, Africa and Asia. The sites at Kynance Cove and Gew Graze nearby, both lie within a SSSI where, however, it is constantly threatened by encroachment from Ivy Hedera helix , Bramble Rubus fruticosus agg., Bracken Pteridium aquilinum and Blackthorn Prunus spinosa which need regular pruning.
