HORSESHOE WORMS (PHORONIDA)

S.M. Turk

Only three species of this marine group have been found in British waters. Emig (1979) believes that phoronids should be included with the Bryozoa and Brachiopoda to form classes within a phylum Lophophorata - instead of which all three groups are generally considered to be separate phyla. Only one species, Phoronis hippocrepia Wright, is Cornish and it has a very wide distribution. Although P. psammophila Cori is recorded in Plymouth Sound (M.B.A., 1957), Emig does not believe that it is British.
