In northern Europe about 141 marine (Howson & Picton, 1997) and 100 species of non-marine (Fitter & Manuel, 1986) Gastrotricha are known. They are all under 0.5mm and in few parts of the British Isles have they been intensively studied. For instance, only one species is listed in the Plymouth area (M.B.A., 1957). However, for the Isles of Scilly, Hummon & Warwick (1990) list 31 species where previously there had been none recorded: most of these are widespread in northern Europe, with three new to science, one being “thus far endemic to the Scillies and a second being “thus far endemic to Cornwall”.
