Ectobius panzeri

Range & Status

Local but widespread nationally, recorded from 69 10km squares.

Regional Distribution

Widespread in VC1. Some colonies may be several kilometres inland, but it is mainly coastal, having been found from The Kelseys, south of Newquay, right round Land' s End to the eastern coast of The Lizard. West Cornwall is a major national stronghold for this species. It has also been found on most islands in the Isles of Scilly. It is rare in VC2 and the few modern records are all on the south coast; at Bohortha, on the Roseland Peninsula, farther east at Dodman Point, and on Rame Head. Old records from the turn of the 20th century are from Fowey, Tregantle and Whitsand Cliffs. The sole north coast VC2 record is over 100 years ago from Widemouth Bay, near Bude.

Habitat & Ecology

Usually found beneath densely clumpy plants such as Heathers and Thrift Armeria maritima . Commonest on the coast, but also found on dry heath or chalk downland inland in a few places.

Threats

Coarsening of herbage; trampling of path margins (a favoured habitat).

Conservation
