Range & Status

Native. Eurosiberian Temperate species. Widspread in coastal and inland parts of southeastern Britain, with sites away from here to southern Scotland mostly coastal; also on the east coast of Ireland.

Regional Distribution

A concentration of sites between Newquay (SW76) and Perranporth (SW75), especially on Penhale Sands. It also occurs at Gwithian (SW54) and at Par Beach (SX05). It has been recorded on the Isles of Scilly as a casual.

Habitat & Ecology

Hound' s-tongue grows in open areas of sand-dune, often around rabbit burrows.

Conservation

Penhale and Gear Sands is a SAC, part-protected from being within the MOD site; other sites near Newquay are managed by the National Trust; and the site at Par Beach is part of a Local Nature Reserve; the site at Gwithian is not protected.
