Range & Status
This small bottom-living species inhabits a wide variety of rivers, streams and lakes. It favours fast-flowing, clear shallow water with gravel/cobble/pebble substrate. In more lowland rivers it can also occur on softer substrates provided that the water is welloxygenated and that there is sufficient cover. A widespread species which is often common in rivers in Britain and across Europe. Cottus gobio is listed in EC Habitats Directive in Annex IIa and is a Species of Conservation Concern.
