Range & Status
Widespread over much of lowland England, but increasingly scarce in the west. Rare and threatened in central Europe.
Regional Distribution
Known from Fowey at the turn of the century (Clark, 1906) and re-discovered close by in Ethy Woods (Alexander, 1991a). Also recorded in 1990 from Little Petherick (Ian Hoare).
Habitat & Ecology
Breeds in King Alfred' s Cakes Daldinia concentrica brackets growing on old Ash Fraxinus excelsior and to a lesser extent Beech Fagus sylvatica and Horse-chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum trees in old pasture-woodlands.
Threats
Loss of older age classes of Ash trees.
Conservation
Ethy Woods are owned by The National Trust.
