Balanus balanus

Range & Status

This barnacle is a Boreal-Arctic, cold water species found from low water spring tide level to about 150m depth, but commonest at around 15-30m. It ranges from the Celtic Sea/Somerset coast of the Bristol Channel to Shetland, and is also present in the North Sea from East Anglia northwards. It is at the extreme southern limit of its distribution range in Devon and Cornwall, and there are few recent records. It has recently been recorded from the south-east of Cornwall (1993) and in the Fal Estuary (1986). Southward (2008) states that it is no longer found in the English Channel.
