Aporus unicolor

Range & Status

This particularly distinctive member of the pompilid fauna is generally scarce, but it has been recorded widely in southern England. The majority of modern records are coastal. There are only two recent records for Cornwall, at Killigerran Head on the Roseland Peninsula and at Carn Barrow near Cadgwith on the Lizard Peninsula. There are numerous old records for the species. A. unicolor preys on the purse-web spider Atypus affinis which it locates and paralyses within the spiders characteristic silken burrow.
