Aplysia fasciata

Range & Status

A southern species found sub-littorally, in shallow water feeding on various algae. Until recently there had been relatively few British records of this large and spectacular mollusc; two from south Devon (Salcombe), two from western Ireland, and one in 1990 from the Helford estuary complex (Bebbington & Turk, 1991). From August until December 2007 an unprecedented number of large specimens were recorded along the south coast of England from the Isles of Scilly east through to Dorset and south to the Channel Islands. In some sites large numbers of individuals were recorded and many of these animals spawned successfully.
