Anaptychia ciliaris subsp. ciliaris
Range & Status
A foliose to subfruticose lichen that prefers nutrient enriched bark of mature trees, especially Elm Ulmus spp., Ash Fraxinus excelsior and Sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus , in well-lit situations. Formerly common (though not in Cornwall, a high rainfall area), this species has undergone a dramatic decline in recent years from a combination of sulphur dioxide air pollution, excessive use of fertilisers and loss of suitable hedgerow, parkland and wayside trees. There is only one recent Cornish record, on Ash, in East Cornwall.
