Forms low turfs or small cushions, often with other
small acrocarpous mosses. Recorded only from coastal sites, on
dry free-draining patches of at least partly bare mineral
soil, mainly on upper parts of sea-cliffs and slopes above
them. Often where there is thin or very thin (often sandy)
soil over rocks (serpentinite, gabbro, slate) or on ledges;
always unshaded, and often in exposed places. Single record
from thin soil on top of 'hedge' on cliff-top. Associates
include Archidium
alternifolium, Bryum dichotomum, Cephaloziella
divaricata, Tortula
viridifolia, Trichostomum
brachydontium, Weissia controversa,
rarely Grimmia
pulvinata, Tortula
